Julian Lage, “Love Hurts”. I just stumbled upon this gem. It was recorded at the Lodge... aka Jeff Tweedy/Wilco recording studio. Lage is known for his Telecaster... but what to do while at the Loft?... Well use Jeff Tweedy’s Gretsch Duo Jet. Most of the tracks were done on the first take. You really get a sense of the physicality of things... the attack of an instrument before the note intended... also a sense of space and dimension. The drum kit... it’s there in the room with you... it occupies space and dimension. Julian’s guitar amp... I know we are hearing that in a room and on some level we of course are hearing the room... but it sounds like the amp itself in a space with you rather than the studio... there is something very real about the sound of the amp.
