Joni Mitchell, “Blue”. What better day to spin this than a cold, rainy, spring day. This is one of those records that’s on all the “lists”. Rolling Stone Magazine’s 500 Greatest Albums of All Time, NYT chose Blue as one of the 25 albums that represented “turning points and pinnacles in 20th century popular music”, etc.. etc. 1970 Mitchell breaks from performing, and she went on vacation around Europe. In The island of Crete she writes the first few songs inspired by a previous lover Cary Raditz. The album actually explores the various stages of relationships from infatuation to insecurity. More songs for the album came from her relationship to Graham Nash. By the summer of 1970 she started an intense relationship with James Taylor... Songs “Blue” and “All I Want” even make reference to a sweater she knitted for him... and his heroin addiction. Nonetheless she was very in love with him which brings us to January 1971 where she makes Blue... by March Taylor’s fame exploded causing troubles between the two, and he breaks off the relationship which devastates her. In 1979 Mitchell said about Blue, “At that period of my life, I had no personal defenses. I felt like the cellophane wrapper on a pack of cigarettes. I felt like I had absolutely no secrets from the world and I couldn’t pretend in my life to be strong. Or be happy.” And you can hear all of that.
