Vampire Weekend, “Father of the Bride”. So full disclosure, have tickets for them sometime soon-ish. A perk of the tickets was a free cd, or a vinyl upgrade. As someone who had been collecting an absurd amount of cd’s and high res digital, the cross over to vinyl yields very purposeful purchases when it comes to vinyl. Well I ordered the vinyl upgrade of course, album unheard. A mitigated risk if you will. Well my first listen to this album the other day was while wandering around the local big box store (riveting I know), on AirPods, which are super convenient, and probably excellent sounding for the average person not into the audio hobby. I was getting interesting spatial effects wearing just those AirPods. For those not into Hifi, stuff like that almost never can be heard on basic headphones. My inner geek was beyond intrigued, and the second I got home the stereo was fired up, literally getting warmed up (yeah if you told me some time ago that I would have Hifi that literally needed to reach a specific temperature to reach spec, I wouldn’t have believed you). Anyway, once warmed up... this album is fire. Maybe it’s even Vampire Weekend’s magnum opus. It’s a familiar vibe, that definitely explores new sonic areas for the band. The cheery vibe balanced by the dark lyrics. The isolated floating vocals, the spatial effects... it’s a stereo geeks paradise. It’s safe to say that after the number of plays this album has gotten this weekend... I really like it. It’s pretty rare behavior for me to play an album over and over in short time. Now... if only that vinyl version arrives sometime soon I will really be a happy camper.
