Amon Tobin, “Fear in a Handful of Dust”. For all those who easily dismiss electronic based music, you’re missing out. If you haven’t caught on to Amon Tobin, the Brazilian native is worth checking out. While he is a producer known for Co-mingling hip hop and jungle rhythms with ambient and dub... there has always been a strong jazz influence and implementation within his music. The opening track alone is worthy of an audiophile demo track. Providing you’re diligent about proper speaker placement... there are elements of this track that mystically seem to float up and through the sides of your room. If you have a big room, walk through the center of it while the track is playing, it’s rather unreal and tough to put into words. This is an individual that pays meticulous attention to production, and someone who clearly enjoys sound. This album breaks an eight year silence from Amon. It’s clearly still him, but has a looser feel, and almost a World music feel to the album at times in comparison to earlier works. In his previous album Amon was preoccupied with technicalities or the technical aspects of you will. ISAM the previous album, is all about precision... but this places demands on the listener. Fear in a Handful of Dust on the other hand is almost something you can get lost in. Enjoy!
