Howlin’ Wolf, “The Howlin’ Wolf Album”. The first time I heard this record I was at one of my favorite night/food spots, coincidentally this particular purveyor also only plays only vinyl, only through tubes, with recognizable... to the discerning eye, high efficiency speakers crudely but aptly, chained to the ceiling. Coincidentally this place has only excellent house margaritas and killer street tacos.... cash only. It should be noted this particular evening I was rather... happy... and it was rather late into the evening. Select patrons were allowed to hand over their vinyl bounty to be placed upon the turntable altar. That being said, while I was fairly familiar with Howlin’ Wolf... I wasn’t psychedelic familiar with Wolf. So cross hours of killer tacos and happy... and an previously unheard psychedelic version of Wolf that made me wonder for a minute or two if I was hearing things. Turns out I was hearing things, thankfully literally so were all the other patrons, and this was another Chess career revival attempt via electric guitar and psychedelic fuzz pedals, but instead of Muddy Waters via Electric Mud... we got negativity on the cover in our face. Despite the current appetite for the world to behave like one giant unfettered comments section... 1969 wasn’t quite ready to see right there on the album cover that the artist didn’t even like the album. Not so surprisingly Muddy’s Electric Mud fared better in sales. But, if you like Electric Mud you will for sure like this. Enjoy!
